For those who have 4K monitor like myself, and want to get the highest resolution I would recommend SwitchResX.
As my main machine in the studio, I’m running a MacPro 5.1 and using 2 monitors, but found that I wasn’t able to get a high resolution directly from OSx setting, but SwitchResX has allowed me to do this.
It’s easy to set up, and install and in the software, there are loads of customisable options.
I’m using the standard video card that came with the MacPro which is an ATi Radeon HD 5770 1024MB, and the maximum resolution it goes to is 3840×2160, which for editing music is fantastic as it provides a huge amount of space on the monitors.
After purchasing an electriQ 28″ 4K HD OSx wasn’t allowing me to drive a higher resolution past 2560 x 1440 through the display settings, and I found that it wasn’t as clear as it was on the LED display, but SwitchResX allows you to push the resolution beyond what OSx is able to achieve.
Here is the current setup I have:
Also, one big issue I did have was the adapter from the display port on the graphics card to HDMI… If you’re not getting the highest resolution possible you may need an active display adapter. I did have an adapter that was working, but it wasn’t active. I’ve purchased this active display adapter but once purchased it instantly fixed this.
Just to give you an idea of how much more space I have on this monitor compare to the other Apple 27 inch LED. The browser was opened on fullscreen on the Apple Display:
